Maturango and China Lake Museums

These two museums are actually very well done and i was excited to stop in to take a look.

The Maturango Museum is very nice and put together well. Inside are the usual displays of local wildlife, past civilization of the Kawaiisu people and a large exhibit displayed the history of soaring plane pilots. I am not postive what Maturango means. My research leads me to a Spanish origin deriavative "maturrango "meaning "Chief of the Coso people". Then again, not really sure.

Next, we went next door to the China Lake Museum. I was a bit dissapointed with the small museum space. I was hoping for more. Still, we started the tour with a really informative video on the China Lake Naval Weapons Base. The land area of the base is the size of Deleware and makes up 1/3 of the entire land holdings of the U.S. Navy.

The size of the base is important due to the special weapons and ordinace testing coducted. Interestingly, there are only about seven hundred active military personnel on the base. The other personnel consist of contractor personnel.

Those last three pix were for you Capt. J.
