Lucious and I ventured out to a location known as 'Sand Canyon" This BLM area is an oasis in the middle of the desert. Only about 45 minutes from Ridgecrest. The route getting there was not terrible. At one point going up, the dirt road turned into a really rocky river bed. Then a few small water crossing's. My truckhandled these areas just fine...slow and easy. I have to admit, I paused at the first water crossing, got out....took my shoes off and walked into the water. I was a bit leary of getting halfway across and getting stuck. Only about twenty feet across but I did not want to just romp through it. After some deep thought and slight anxiety, I motored through it. Thankfully, the truck had no issues at all.
We drove to the western end of the canyon where the trailhead begins. Although there is a small creek , the area is quite desolate and hot! There had been a fire not long ago and burned the majority of trees and bushes. We only hiked for maybe 3/4 mile. Looking ahead, just more desert and heat. Poor little Lucious was not having it at all. In fact, he has struggled in the heat the entire time. This location was the second spot (after Fossil Falls) where he got to wear his muttluks.
On the way back, I stopped at this little spot you will see in the pictured, that according to my sister is popular with the locals. I did not see a soul until I parked under the tree. Then, here came group of folks to splash around. Time to move on.
